I'm really at the point where this year isn't the year for reading and reviewing. It hasn't been the best year for my writing either. So many real life issues popped up in extreme ways that I haven't even cracked a book in almost a week. I'm trying to make the best of four months left in the year. We'll see how close I can get to that 100 book goal.

Many thanks to all those who have reached out with encouragement and kind words. I really appreciate them. Those messages keep me going even when I think there's no point. Though I do most of my reading and reviewing out of love -okay, addiction - to books, I treasure the many authors who have reached out to me.

And now we entered September, the realm of cooler temperatures and Friday football games! In this area there is a great rivalry between two high schools. Their first meeting on the football field ended with my old school winning. Now the heat is on for the next time they meet. These hometown clashes bring the community together even as the people stood on different sidelines. It's a weird thing to see, but watching how people react can inspire stories or novels. Every human interaction is fodder for the author's pen.

I'm still more behind on my TBR list than I'd like to be at this moment in time. I do feel happy that I'm making progress instead of staying stagnate. Alongside the pages I've devoured, I've also picked up a few hundred words on something that's not NaNo2012. I feel bad for that poor novel of mine, but I reached a point where I can't figure out what's going to happen next without forcing the story into a mold. That might ruin the story. I don't want to take the chance that I'll ruin everything I've worked so hard to achieve with the novel.

 Several questions still surround my family's future, but for now, we have done all we can. The best thing I can do is focus on the items requiring my attention now. Thankfully, that includes my reading awesome books, finishing edits on my works, and making a few more items for my crochet projects. Having these little goals to finish each day or week has helped my anxiety level a lot more than I give them credit for doing.

So far this week I have moved a few more pages into the edited pile. Poor NaNo2012 has missed all the attention. I'm unsure exactly where I was going in some scenes because I'm no longer in the moment with the story. However, going back over it after some time away allowed me to see some plot holes that I didn't catch at the time. Maybe it's not such a big thing to hide my work away for a while and then come back.

Whew! I'm glad to be back in the reading seat. I've definitely missed my word-filled friends, but real life hasn't released me from its clutches completely. My need to read is growing and filling me with hope that everything will return to a bit of normality at some point. Until that moment arrives, I'll strap in and ride this roller coaster life's built for me.

The other good news is that I've begun to write once again as well. Plenty of story ideas traipsed around this brain of mine. I've tucked them away in the ever-growing folder until I finish working on another novel and few short stories that I began near the beginning of this year. Well, they'll stay there unless they pester me enough to break my self-imposed rule to finish what I start.

2015 has taught me that I should never underestimate its ability to surprise me. When I thought I had things figured out, my family and I were dealt a huge, unexpected blow. It's taken me this long to recover and begin to take up my hobbies once again. Now that I'm back on track, I've set a slow pace in order to keep my goals in sight.

I'm eternally grateful to all the authors have given me their patience and understanding during this time. Without them and you, the readers of this blog, I would have given up on a lot of things by now. As far as my writing goes, I have made some headway at a much slower pace than I've been working through my TBR pile. Sometimes I wish it could hit the big time with it, but I know I must conquer my fear to submit first.

Happy July, everyone! Welcome to the sticky, sweet days of summer. This week is set to be a short one as the Independence Day holiday nears. I'm planning to take Friday off and spend time with family and a few friends. Therefore, no book review will be posted on Friday. I will resume my schedule on the Monday following the holiday weekend. Happy Canada Day to all my northern neighbors as well!

Though the contest was called off due to lack of entries, I was very pleased with myself for setting a goal and reaching it. I began and finished a short story within a couple of months. Now, that may not be much of a goal for most people. With my brainfog and other health issues, it's a big accomplishment. I'm pushing ahead and using this momentum to finish a few other things on my plate. Hope you all are doing the same!

Summer is officially here as the Summer Solstice occurred over the weekend. Well, here in the Northern Hemisphere. The Southern Hemisphere celebrated the Winter Solstice. The days will be more hot and humid in our region. Plenty of chances for storms and tornadoes grows as the temperature increases. It's always something though. Nature never really takes a vacation, no matter where you live.

Since I'm stuck inside except for a short time each day, I am using this to my advantage to clear some of these poor books off my to-read list. They've lingered there long enough. Plus, I've received some pretty good-looking books in the past week. Looking forward to diving into them, but I can't until I finish more than I have been. Word addiction is hard to manage when there are thousands of books to be devoured.

Summer heat is now here, bringing its best friend, humidity, with it. Perfect reason to stay indoors and catch up on my reading list. So far, I've actually been able to knock some of these off the TBR without adding more to the bottom. Of course, that will change soon as I'm looking forward to some new selections arriving at my doorstep.

The past month has been a barren one in the writing department. I thought I had a good short story ready for this local contest, but the finished story wasn't something that I felt right about entering. Editing my other works hasn't fared any better. It's almost as though my writing mojo left for some sunny beach resort, leaving me here with a bunch of dark, gloomy days. I hope it comes back soon and sticks around for more than a day or two.

Feeling like my reading mojo is coming back has helped me to keep turning those pages. I wasn't feeling up to doing anything the past few weeks, if I'm to be honest. Sometimes I just have to push myself. In the end, I usually feel better afterwards. Other times it allows me to know my limits.

Nearly finished with another book on this list. I feel bad that it's taking so long to get through the printed books. They're just as valuable to me as the digital versions. I love all versions of the written word. My goal is to knock these off by the end of the year. All of them will be read, reviewed and loved.

Days have a way of becoming routine. No matter how you switch the order of activities, they still feel like the same old thing. That's one of the reasons I love this blog so much. All these books allow me the chance to slip away from the routine and enter into the skin of someone else, experience their day and come back to my world when I need to do something else. With the season shifting into summer, I'll be spending more time inside than I'd like. Perfect way to escape is to crawl inside these books.

A wide range of worlds await my arrival. From the straight-laced society of the 1800s to the wild unknowns of a world where magic still rules supreme, I'm able to escape the pain and monotony of my everyday life. Time to dust off these printed books, scour their every page and file them away on my bookshelf or lend to another home. My poor Kindle groans under the weight of so many books. I need to pay some attention to it as well.

Whew! I'm back!

It's been a difficult week or so.  I thought I'd be able to finish a number of books while I was going to the doctor's or sitting at home. Unfortunately, the crud I picked up from somewhere worked against me. I did a lot of sleep and a few crochet projects whenever I could keep my eyes open. I attempted to read. That was a failure as I read the same sentence five times before falling asleep. Now that I'm feeling better, I'm attempting to make up for lost time.

Today's also been a good day for writing. I was able to get a short story finished and three more pages of Nano2012. I sincerely hope to get a few more pages before the day is over. After a bit of polishing I might enter this contest I read about in our local magazine, Pen It! Magazine. I've only a few days left until the deadline, so work I must!

Just when I think my life will become boring so that I can get to my long-suffering TBR list, an adventure reared its head. We had a pretty intense storm earlier this week that knocked out our power. Leave it to me to be stuck in a doctor's office with no lights. I am praying that the appointments toward the end of the week don't have such an adventure awaiting me.

Trying to keep up with my book goal for the year and maintaining 1k word minimum on my own works are becoming difficult with all these health issues. I keep typing those words and reading those pages, but some days it feels like I'm only treading water. The encouragement from my supporters has helped to keep me going. On to the next book and the next challenge, I say! With that in mind, I'm pushing myself to read at least two books a week from here on out. There's also a short story contest that I may have an entry or two ready for in the next few days.

Lot of doctor appointments this week put a damper on my reading plans. However, the books are piling up to the ceiling, so I have to keep reading. The fire department would be citing me if my house was filled with all the books I'm waiting to read. Thank goodness for the library and Kindle! The only ways I can have over 2,000 books sitting on a shelf.

This past week has been a flurry of stolen moments and quick hits of words. No more than thirty minutes to spare at a time, I've tried to sneak in some reading to knock down that TBR list as well as some editing on NaNo2012. It's coming along at a steady pace. I'm starting to find a rhythm to the story. It's much easier to imagine what's going to happen next now. I've even twisted one of the characters a little more to add another chapter. I am starting to like this bad guy.

This last week was a busy one. I spent much of the week going to doctor appointments and finishing up some crochets projects that have been lingering around the house. Over the weekend I was able to attend a local writer's conference. Not many speakers were listed, but the information they provided was exactly what I needed to give me a push in the right directions. I love learning and hope for more opportunities to make my writing better.

Speaking of writing, I am so happy that my fire's been rekindled. I still believe that NaNo2012 has promise. Rewriting has been difficult because the story didn't flow right from the first chapter. There was something off about it. That threw the rest of the story off. When I figured out how to fix my first chapter, it involved a complete revision and throwing out the old chapter entirely. Now the story feels right to me and reads better, according to the few who have read the bits I have completed.

Spring has brought back the chilly weather for the next few days. It's the perfect opportunity to snuggle down with a comfortable blanket, a cup of something warm to drink and a pile of books next to me. Unfortunately, that's not what I've been able to do here lately. So far the year has been living up to its name as a year of change.

I'm almost completely well from my surgery. Since I feel like a different person, I've been able to focus on my to-do and TBR lists a little more each day. I was even able to spend some time writing a few days last week. Then only downside that I've noticed is my endurance is lower than it used to be before the surgery. Time to work on that as I'm working on everything else. One step at a time, one book at a time.

Let me begin this week by thanking the many authors who have graciously given me patience and understanding. With all the various health problems so far this year, I haven't been able to get the job done as fast as I'd hoped. Hopefully, this is the last of the surprises in that area for the year. At least, that's what I'm believing!

I've picked up the pace a bit with the reading and reviewing. Okay, that's mostly due to the fact I'm under restrictions until I see the surgeon and get clearance to resume daily tasks. I'll still take what I can get at this point. The great thing about the past few weeks is that it's allowed me to read a few books just for fun and not to dissect on the blog. Since the surgery took away the most of the overall sick feeling I've had as of late, my mind's been stuffed full of ideas for stories and novels. I snagged scraps of paper to jot them down. not exactly sure where they will end up, but I'm willing to ride them out and see where they take me.

If anyone says that you can get right back at your usual things right after surgery, they're not being honest! Here I thought having a simple, unexpected surgery was going to be something easy to overcome since I mostly have reading, reviewing and writing on my agenda most days. Between the pain, soreness and medicine they sent me home with, I was out of it more often than not. Rereading the same sentence again and again didn't help either.

So instead of forcing myself to do poor work, I put aside the TBR list and focused on reading something for fun. Unfortunately, that was the only book I finished completely this past week. With a sense of accomplishment on my side, I feel more focused and ready to get back at this blog thing. So many awesome books need attention and I can't wait to give it to them.

Brand new month already!! Can you even believe it? And a new season!

So excited to see the sunshine barreling through my blinds after several long weeks of grey skies and cold, cold temperatures. Though I haven't felt my best yet, there's a positive difference. I'm marking it down in the "Win" column. More of those to come, I hope.

Recently I picked up NaNo2012 again. I had begun to edit, reworking only what I'd already put down on the pages. But something didn't feel right about the story. There seemed to be something missing that put everything on the right track and would make it feel smooth as it goes from place to place. Finally the idea struck me! I knew how to fix the beginning of the story to get things rolling. That one little change had fueled the fire until other obligations forced me to set it aside. Until now. So I'm forcing myself to get back into the mode of putting words on the page. It's the only way to get the story out. I have to become disciplined once again.

I feel that I need to apologize to all those expecting reviews from me over the past few weeks. Okay, since the beginning of the year. I have had one of the worst beginnings of the year and it's mainly due to my health. When I begin to recover from one illness or another, there seems to be a new bug going around that I ultimately catch. I push myself to finish as much as I can, but this also makes me feel weaker than before. It's been a horrible cycle that I haven't been able to break yet. My hope is that with warmer weather on the horizon, I'll be able to catch up with everything that I've had to set aside for the time being. At least, I'm praying that's the case.

It's taken me about two weeks to get a couple of books finished and their reviews typed. Neither has been the easy part when your eyes keep wandering where they shouldn't. Thankfully my hands were feeling generous and I was able to catch up on a lot of crochet work and some writing that I had neglected as well. One by one I will conquer these to-do lists! I'm very determined to get back into my regular routine and provide you with reviews on time.

Currently Reading

Ah! The smell of Spring within the air outside coupled with the smell of books inside makes for a happy Kay. It's been wonderful to step back into reading mode. I know I'm way behind in my reading and reviewing, but the blue skies and promise of warmer temps help to drive me deeper into these pages before me. The list I have below keeps growing though I try to restrain it. I'm going to buckle down and get these printed books knocked off soon - if the digital versions can release their hold on me for a little while.

While I was down with the flu (for the umpteenth time), I worked on quite a few of my crochet projects. I kept trying to read, but the words swam in front of me. Reading the same paragraph over and over and still not understanding made me feel worse. I had to set it aside until I was nearly well. Now those pages don't stand a chance!
